FairWild Workshop: Certifying sustainable Frankincense in Kenya

Radisson Blu Hotel Nairobi-Arboretum

Nairobi
Kenya

This invitation-only workshop is part of the FairWild Darwin Initiative project, Certifying Sustainable Frankincense through a Global Value Chains Approach. AWEI is a partner in this project.

FairWild Standard for Frankincense and other gum and resins

For buyers of frankincense, myrrh and other gums and resins in the global marketplace, the current period is one of both opportunity and risk. Increasingly, brands insist that the communities and landscapes which produce gums and resins should flourish, not suffer exploitation. And yet, human rights, collectors' dignity, and ecosystem health cannot be taken for granted under the status quo.

FairWild certification is the leading pathway for ethical and sustainable frankincense suppliers to sector-wide recognition. It is used and promoted by leading European and American brands using frankincense in their products. In Somalia, Oman, and Ethiopia, FairWild certification is being adopted by an increasing number of producers and processors. A small number of suppliers in Kenya have already been FairWild-certified for several years, but there is potential for much greater engagement.

Agenda

Certifying Sustainable Frankincense in Kenya

This one-day workshop brings key players in Kenya's frankincense industry together to explore common challenges in understanding the priorities of international buyers/brands, and to discuss how sustainability, resilience, and transparency can be enhanced in the sector.

Participants include operators, processors, representatives of collector groups, exporters, conservation NGOs, research and academic institutions, as well as development agencies/advisors will be in attendance.

To facilitate open, frank and productive discussion, proceedings are held under The Chatham house rule and will not be recorded.
