Rapid review of submitted IUCN Motions with sustainable use implications

Introduction

This draft reviews the relevance to sustainable use of some of the 139 Motions submitted for consideration by the IUCN World Conservation Congress, taking place in October 2025. A more complete version reviewing all the Motions is being prepared and will be released at a later date.

In this draft, the motions reviewed are divided into two sections:

1. Motions with direct and obvious relevance to sustainable use
2. Motions where sustainable use does not appear to be the primary focus, but which may have significant implications

For each motion, we highlight relevant sections of the preambulatory and operative clauses of the Motions with a focus on what is expected to be done by IUCN. This typically involves requesting that the Director General take action. We then also make comments and recommendations.

This brief has been produced to assist members of the IUCN Sustainable Use and Livelihoods Specialist Group with their inputs on these and other motions relevant to the sustainable use of wild species.
